Can I Get Child Care Subsidy if I’m not an Australian Citizen?

Good news - you may still be eligible for Child Care Subsidy (CCS), depending on your residency or visa status. If you (and your partner, if you have one) live in Australia and meet the broader CCS requirements, you may still be able to receive support with childcare costs. This is a really common question and the reassuring part is that citizenship isn’t the only pathway to eligibility.

Who may be eligible for CCS?

You may be eligible for CCS if you live in Australia and hold an eligible visa, such as:

  • Australian permanent residency
  • New Zealand citizen (Special Category Visa)
  • Partner visa (temporary or provisional)
  • Humanitarian or protection visa
  • Certain other visas in specific circumstances

The key is whether your visa meets the Australian Government’s residency requirements for CCS.

Common visa types that may qualify

Permanent visa holders

Families with Australian permanent residency may be eligible if they meet all other CCS requirements.

This includes:

  • skilled migration visas
  • family visas
  • humanitarian permanent visas

New Zealand citizens (SCV)

New Zealand citizens living in Australia on a Special Category Visa (SCV) may be eligible for CCS.

Partner visas (temporary or provisional)

Some partner visa holders may qualify, including:

  • Subclass 309 – Partner (Provisional)
  • Subclass 820 – Partner (Temporary)

Humanitarian and protection visas

Some humanitarian-related visas may be eligible, such as:

  • Temporary Protection Visa (Subclass 785)
  • Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (Subclass 790)
  • other temporary humanitarian visas

Other special circumstances

Some families may also qualify in specific situations, for example:

  • overseas students receiving Australian Government financial assistance
  • families participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme
  • families experiencing hardship or special circumstances

These situations are assessed individually, so it’s worth checking your specific circumstances.

Important: other CCS requirements still apply

Even if your visa is eligible, you’ll still need to meet the standard CCS criteria.

This includes:

  • caring for a child aged 13 or under
  • using an approved childcare service
  • being responsible for paying the childcare fees
  • meeting immunisation requirements

Visa eligibility is just one part of the picture.

How to check if you’re eligible

If you’re unsure where you stand, the easiest next step is to check directly. You can:

  • log into your myGov account linked to Centrelink
  • contact Services Australia for guidance

Because visa rules can change, it’s always best to confirm your situation with an official source.

A quick reassurance

If you’re navigating childcare and visas at the same time, you’re not alone - many families are in the same position. The system isn’t designed to exclude you - but eligibility does depend on the details of your residency status. A quick check can usually give you a clear answer and help you move forward with confidence.
