We were disappointed that the centre chose not to include books that reflect different family structures. We offered to donate inclusive storybooks and were initially invited by the director to do a storytime, but the owner later declined. I understand centres have different approaches, but it didn’t feel fully inclusive for families like ours. That said, the permanent educators have been wonderful, caring, and supportive, and we really appreciate their work.

We have our 2 toddlers in the centre and we all love the educators at this centre. However, we recently approached the director to donate a few inclusive, age-appropriate books that depict different family structures — including families like ours (a two-mum family). Although our children are babies, we felt it was important that the older children see diverse families reflected in their environment, as recommended under the Approved Learning Framework. At first, the director was positive and even invited me to come in and read one of the books. However, a few hours later, she withdrew the invitation and explained that the owner had overruled the idea. There was no discussion about the specific titles, no request to review the content, and no opportunity for dialogue — just a firm “no.” In a meeting that followed, the owner said she wished to remain “neutral” and referred to “prior experiences” involving conservative Christian families who might object. She could not provide examples of recent concerns from families, nor did she acknowledge that neutrality does not mean excluding certain families from representation. She stated that the centre already has inclusive books, but has not been able to provide a list, and said she would “review” the books we offered — all of which are publicly available in NSW libraries and simply depict common family types such as single-parent families, grandparent carers, two-mum and two-dad families. We left the meeting feeling that the owner had overstepped her role and prevented the director from doing her job in providing a safe, inclusive, and equitable learning environment, as required by the Approved Learning Framework and the National Quality Standard. Her approach revealed personal bias and a desire to appease hypothetical objections, rather than support all families in the community. It has raised serious concerns for us about how future issues involving equity or diversity will be handled. TLDR: if you are a rainbow family or are looking for an inclusive centre, I suggest you look elsewhere.

We moved our son to L&L recently after being at another centre and it has been the best decision we have made. He is so so happy and the team are just the best! The smaller centre vibe is so calming and our son runs up to the big red door every day so excited to see Katie, Jay, Audrey,Anais and the team
