I'm posting anonymously to protect my child's privacy. Everything here is our own first-hand experience.

Our son attended NuKids as a toddler. He has sensory needs (we now know he's ASD), and his time there was really stressful for our whole family.

He cried every morning before care, fought me getting into the car, and refused to get out when we arrived. At the time I thought it was a phase. Looking back, he was telling us something wasn't right.

I dreaded pick-up because it was almost always a rundown of his bad behaviour, sometimes in front of him. When we asked how his behaviour was being supported, the answer was essentially that they were telling him "no".

He found lying on his back really distressing and would melt down on the change table. We explained what worked at home and offered practical suggestions. Staff said they'd listened, but nothing changed, and we were always told it was centre policy. Instead, we were repeatedly told how difficult he was to change. On a number of occasions I picked him up with a dirty nappy that clearly hadn't been changed for a long time. One educator also made a point of telling me she'd been hurt while changing him, which felt more like blame than a conversation about how to support him.

I raised our concerns with management but didn't see any real change. One educator was lovely with him, but overall the centre wasn't equipped to support his needs.

He's now at a centre that listens to families and adapts to his needs, and he loves going. Children with sensory or regulation needs deserve patience and flexibility, not rigid policy and blame. If your child has additional needs, ask a lot of questions about how willing the centre is to adapt before you enrol.

Will never suggest anyone to send their kids there. The most careless, lazy staff. No standard of service. I gave one feedback and my child and we were troubled constantly for two weeks on that one topic. And then the 16 months old together with us became the educator's enemy number one. The behavior with our child was so bad in front of us, I wonder what they did behind.

My son attended Nukids Early Learning three years ago. Our experience was challenging, and I believe it’s important to share this so the centre can improve and parents can make informed choices.

We received complaints almost every day about our son’s behaviour. These were often said in front of him, which affected his confidence and made him feel labelled. At the time, we didn’t know he had ADHD/ADD traits, but we expected the educators to recognise signs and guide us. Instead, the approach felt more like criticism than support.

A change in environment had triggered his behaviour, but rather than helping him regulate or suggesting strategies, he was seen as a “problem.” This followed him into kindergarten, where the school mentioned receiving negative reports from the childcare.

Thankfully, his current school has been amazing — they understood his needs, worked with us, and helped him regulate. That showed us how much difference trained, empathetic educators can make.

My feedback to Nukids: please invest in behavioural and neurodiversity training for your educators. Children with strong emotions need understanding, not constant complaints. A childcare centre can either build a child’s confidence or unintentionally break it.

For parents: Nukids may work well for children who are already well‑regulated, but if your child needs emotional support or shows ADHD/ADD traits, I would recommend choosing a centre with specialised behavioural awareness.
