Our experience has been nothing short of amazing with Pelelican Childcare. Sending our son as first time parents when he was 10mnths old was a new experience for us but all of the staff welcomed us all in. The staff are all very knowledgeable and willing to help out. Our son adores being dropped off to his room leaders each session. The app we have access to is a great way to stay up to date with food, naps and alike. Thanks team!

About the Curriculum

About the Curriculum

“Let the child be the scriptwriter, director and the actor in their own play” - Magda Gerber

Nursery Space: 6 weeks – 2 years

Learning starts from before birth, and our Educators have created a welcoming and nurturing nursery environment where each baby feels safe to explore and discover new things - through their senses, their communication and cues (body language, facial expression and sounds) and through experimentation. On any given day you can see the nursery children engaging in all types of play including sensory play, music time, story time and more. Every day provides a brand new, exciting adventure for our babies to support their development, learning and wellbeing.

Toddler Space: 2 - 3 years

Our teachers and educators encourage the children to learn through play to help enhance their sensory-motor development. This happens through carefully planned music, dance, games, role playing and reading experiences.

On any given day the Toddlers can be seen developing their numeracy by building a tower, sorting objects, pointing and identifying shapes and patterns and participating in counting songs and games.

Children in our toddler space are encouraged to participate in group play. Group play is important as it helps our toddlers develop important social skills such as, turn-taking, developing self-confidence and emotional self-regulation. Our skilled team helps children through talking, planning and role modelling.

Kindergarten Space: 3 – 6 years

Kindergarten is a unique time for learning with peers and developing skills for later learning including confidence and curiosity, important skills for starting school. Our play-based program has school readiness at its core, encouraging active engagement in learning and supporting a range of positive developmental outcomes including resilience, independence, critical thinking and creativity.

The oral language supports literacy learning and a child’s oral language ability is the best predictor for later success in learning to read and write. Hearing the sounds within a language is the first critical step for all literacy learning. Our team supports our Kindergarten children's literacy development by engaging in rich discussions, reading, storytelling, dramatic play and experimentation all of which introduce new vocabulary as part of everyday conversations.

Throughout the Kindergarten year, children use their language to share ideas, ask questions, express themselves, and connect with peers and adults in social settings.

Social-emotional skills, including the ability to self-regulate emotions, are supported through group learning experiences. Our team supports each child’s social and emotional development by labelling and talking about emotions and supporting appropriate responses as together, they engage in new and challenging situations. Our goal in the kindergarten year is to prepare children and families for a smooth transition to primary school.

Health and Nutrition

Health and Nutrition

Our centre chef prepares and cooks nutritious meals daily, catering to the unique dietary requirements of every child. We believe that by encouraging active participation (such as growing their own fruit and vegetables, preparing, and finally cooking!) children learn to appreciate and understand the importance of healthy eating across a wide variety of food.

Our centre offers seasonal whole food-based menus – created to delight the fussiest eaters.

Hi my name is Tayla and I am the Centre Manager here at Pelican Mount Martha. I began my early childhood education and care career in 2010 and started at Pelican Childcare Mount Martha in 2014.

I have a Diploma in Children’s Services. Throughout my time in early childhood education, I have held many roles, including assistant educator, lead educator, educational leader, assistant centre manager, and now centre manager. In more recent years, I have truly found my passion in leading teams to deliver quality care and education to the children in our care and helping educators find their passions within their roles.

The learning opportunities offered in a child care and early education centre are designed to enhance children’s social skills, problem-solving, emotional wellbeing, physical health, language and cognitive skills in ways that can’t always be achieved at home. As a centre manager, I am passionate about helping children on their learning and life journey.

My focus has always been to ensure that each child is able to achieve their full potential within these crucial first five years of life. It’s important to ensure that children are supported in a nurturing environment and develop positive, trusting relationships with the educators.

The team at Pelican Mount Martha are incredibly passionate about their roles. Each of them brings their own knowledge and experiences to our team. We are really proud of our centre and what we offer to our children, families, and community.

We have a strong focus on open, respectful communication with our families. We regularly seek our families’ feedback about the day-to-day operation of the Centre and what changes they might want to see. As a centre we also really enjoy hosting special events for our families that give them the opportunity to engage in our Pelican Mount Martha community!

After months of issues, we raised concerns about two separate health professionals reporting the same issue, with the same member of staff, repeatedly prompting our disabled child to self harm. When we reported this to the centre manager, instead of being horrified at a staff member potentially bullying a disabled child with written evidence giving dates and times of the events, she instead said ‘well it’s hard to do anything if it’s not reported straight away’. We were then permanently excluded from the centre the following day. The exact level of safeguarding and inclusion you’d expect from a G8 centre. They said it’s for everyone’s safety, although I would argue dismissing the member of staff would be better for everyone’s safety. Steer clear!

Response from the owner 29 Aug 2025

Hi Samantha, We are sorry to hear that your experience with our centre did not meet your expectations. We take all feedback seriously and have already worked through this matter with your family directly. Bullying is not tolerated at any of our centres, and as you know, this has not been raised before now. In your conversation yesterday with our Practice Partner Lead, we reiterated that we have loved having your son attend our centre for the past year, however as we understand he now requires one-on-one care and support, which we unfortunately are not able to provide at our centre. While we understand your disappointment, please be assured that the safety and wellbeing of all children in our care remains our highest priority. If you would like to discuss this further, please phone our Family Care Team on 1800 317 371 who will be able to connect you with our Practice Partner Lead. Kind Regards, The Pelican Childcare Team

Our autistic son attended Pelican Mount Martha until we were notified that for his safety, the safety of his friends and the staff that his care had been terminated with immediate effect. No one will tell his friends that he can no longer play with them because it is ‘not safe’ to be around a disabled child. He may not be able to talk, but he can hear and he knows why he’s being excluded. It’s because he isn’t seen as normal; he communicates and thinks differently to the ‘average’ child. Unlike some other children who attend the centre, he has never hit, kicked or acted aggressively in any way to any other child. I may be incredibly biased, but any daycare should be privileged to have such a loving, intelligent and placid child in their care. We need to teach our children about diversity and differences, not immediately exclude and segregate them. It is 2025…not 1945. I would recommend sending your child somewhere where inclusion is supported and not discouraged.
