Our daughter commenced at Headstart at 11 months old and I can honestly say the entire experience from an initial tour, enrolment, through to orientation and then full days of care has been such a positive experience. The educators are so so amazing, their care for each child's wellbeing and development is so evident as is their passion to connect with and see each child thrive. Their communication is awesome and it's amazing that the children have the same carers each day! Our daughter LOVES her Headstart days and now claps her hands with excitement when we enter! Highly recommend all facets of OG Headstart!

About the Curriculum

About the Curriculum

“Let the child be the scriptwriter, director and the actor in their own play” - Magda Gerber

Nursery Space: 6 weeks – 2 years

Learning starts from before birth, and our Educators have created a welcoming and nurturing nursery environment where each baby feels safe to explore and discover new things - through their senses, their communication and cues (body language, facial expression and sounds) and through experimentation. On any given day you can see the nursery children engaging in all types of play including sensory play, music time, story time and more. Every day provides a brand new, exciting adventure for our babies to support their development, learning and wellbeing.

Toddler Space: 2 - 3 years

Our teachers and educators encourage the children to learn through play to help enhance their sensory-motor development. This happens through carefully planned music, dance, games, role playing and reading experiences.

On any given day the Toddlers can be seen developing their numeracy by building a tower, sorting objects, pointing and identifying shapes and patterns and participating in counting songs and games.

Children in our toddler space are encouraged to participate in group play. Group play is important as it helps our toddlers develop important social skills such as, turn-taking, developing self-confidence and emotional self-regulation. Our skilled team helps children through talking, planning and role modelling.

Kindergarten Space: 3 – 6 years

Kindergarten is a unique time for learning with peers and developing skills for later learning including confidence and curiosity, important skills for starting school. Our play-based program has school readiness at its core, encouraging active engagement in learning and supporting a range of positive developmental outcomes including resilience, independence, critical thinking and creativity.

The oral language supports literacy learning and a child’s oral language ability is the best predictor for later success in learning to read and write. Hearing the sounds within a language is the first critical step for all literacy learning. Our team supports our Kindergarten children's literacy development by engaging in rich discussions, reading, storytelling, dramatic play and experimentation all of which introduce new vocabulary as part of everyday conversations.

Throughout the Kindergarten year, children use their language to share ideas, ask questions, express themselves, and connect with peers and adults in social settings.

Social-emotional skills, including the ability to self-regulate emotions, are supported through group learning experiences. Our team supports each child’s social and emotional development by labelling and talking about emotions and supporting appropriate responses as together, they engage in new and challenging situations. Our goal in the kindergarten year is to prepare children and families for a smooth transition to primary school.

Health and Nutrition

Health and Nutrition

Our centre chef prepares and cooks nutritious meals daily, catering to the unique dietary requirements of every child. We believe that by encouraging active participation (such as growing their own fruit and vegetables, preparing, and finally cooking!) children learn to appreciate and understand the importance of healthy eating across a wide variety of food.

Our centre offers seasonal whole food-based menus – created to delight the fussiest eaters.

Meet the team

Meet the team

I started working in early learning in 2000. I joined the team at Headstart Ocean Grove in 2009. I hold an Advanced Diploma in Children’s Services, a Diploma in Business Management and Leadership, a Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment and I am currently studying my Bachelor of Early Childhood Education. Over the years I have worked as a Lead Educator, Assistant Centre Manager and Centre Manager. I have been at this amazing Centre for nearly 13 years.

I have always wanted to work with children. It has been a privilege for me watch them grow and become confident learners. I believe that all children have the right to feel safe, loved and secure in their environment. All children are individuals and they all have their own unique personalities, which is why I love what I do.

Early Childhood Education aims at the holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs in order to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing. At Headstart Ocean Grove, we have the most amazing passionate team who are passionate about their roles. They make our centre the best place to be. A large number of our team have called Headstart Ocean Grove home for many years.

I believe that it is really important that we as educators work in partnership with families to ensure that each child develops to their full potential. We rely on regular communication to make our families feel that they are a valuable part of our children’s learning journey.

I am sharing a heartwarming story that beautifully encapsulates the remarkable impact the team has on the children under your care. This past weekend, my son surprised us by proficiently using the keyword sign for 'more,' a sign that I hadn't introduced to him yet. This milestone is a testament to the dedication and expertise of Teika, Kaytlyn, Pat, Charlotte, and other educators who contribute to my sons growth. Their patience, nurturing guidance, and attention to detail, such as encouraging sign language to complement verbal communication, have not gone unnoticed. It is evident that my sons educators are deeply committed to understanding and meeting each child's unique needs. These small yet significant moments, like my son's newfound skill, fill our family with immense gratitude for the nurturing environment you cultivate. A heartfelt thanks to the educators who support my son daily. Your positive influence extends far beyond the classroom's walls, shaping brighter futures for our children. A side note, my son has attended 3 centres and I have a background as an early years educator, I can safely say this learning environment is second to none.

My son has had a great experience in the nursery at Headstart. I've been really impressed with the care and commitment shown by the educators and delighted to see my son form such solid relationships with both them and the other children. Highly recommend.

Headstart Ocean Grove is tired and lacks care. The Center is old but grubby everything you touch from all the doors, gates and windows are always dirty. Old can be fine but the cleaning is well below par. I’ve never seen a clean door frame let alone clean surface in the Center. Lacks community engagement and variety- they have never taken the children out in all the time my daughter has been there (April -August) and only do in centre activities - nothing external is brought in. The children are missing out on key behaviour and learning from lack of the community engagement. Young inexperienced staff and there is a lot of new faces. There is zero developmental feedback we don’t get any ongoing information about their development stages or learning- the alerts on the app gives more info about “they ate and went to toilet/nappy changes”. We only get a general summary of activities in junior kindergarten but zero else. Poor food and lacks variety- The food is really questionable and of poor variety, I think fish fingers with tomato sauce are still being served under a new name after I complained about them. Materials in use are a mess, basics like pencils are not sharpened and texter pens are out of ink. Paint brushes and paint pots are all old and messy. It appears the staff are not coping as there are so many ongoing incidents of bad behaviour hitting scratching and no action, process or care. There is very little professionalism and the staff is either too young and immature or older and all seem overwhelmed. I’ve witnessed older ladies snap at children instead of being patient and younger staff simply ignore snotty noses and state oh that child always has a snotty nose. Lacks innovation and care. Overall I feel there the Center is tired and possibly stuck in the past. There is very little care for the property and it really lacks innovation. This lack of focus lack of care and pride in the property is damaging as is clearly fostering children’s bad behaviour as when I complained 5 or more times that my 3year old daughter is being hit by boys in the face I’m told they are “aware of the behaviour and goings on” but do not doing anything about.
