We have had an excellent experience at SDN Owl’s House. Our son is in the preschooler room, having been at the centre since he was a baby. The teachers are lovely, and you really get the sense they care about the children and want the best for them. In the time we have been there, there has been very little staff turnover. This gives us confidence that the centre is being run well and the staff are happy there, and it’s been so nice for my son being surrounded by the same familiar faces since he started. My daughter is about to start when she turns one and I can’t imagine sending her anywhere else.

Programs

Programs

At SDN Owl's House, get more than school-ready, get life-ready.

Getting school-ready is a journey. It begins with your child’s very first day at our welcoming early education and care centre and continues with our dedicated preschool program.

Infants and toddlers

We know that the best thing we can do for your infant or toddler is to support them to grow and develop in safe, unhurried, nurturing and challenging environments. Because infants and toddlers are naturally curious, our centre has well-equipped indoor and outdoor areas that will keep your child moving and give them daily opportunities to explore their limits and grow their abilities.

Preschool

Developed by university-trained early childhood teachers, our preschool program focuses on the whole child. Children learn to make friends and work together, while gaining the skills and independence they need to thrive through the big transition to school.

Our preschool program follows an evidence-backed, play-based learning approach. Children have fun and follow their curiosity, while we weave in vital skills and learning outcomes.

SDN uses Australia’s Early Years Learning Framework to explore a diverse curriculum from science to social justice. Our days are predictable but flexible, blending structured and spontaneous learning, free play, movement and quiet time.

Our centre has a transition to school program where our teachers and educators work together with local schools to prepare your child for a smooth transition, and support families through the process.

Centre philosophy

Centre philosophy

Following the establishment of the House at Pooh Corner (THPC) by the Student Guild in 1969, the UNSW Women’s Employment Strategy eventually welcomed the SDN Owl's House centre in 2013.

While the Owl's House location began as a part of the UNSW's Strategic Intent to create an environment supporting the development and wellbeing of children, UNSW announced the termination of its management in three centres, including Owl's House, in 2020. SDN successfully obtained management of the centres in 2021 and has been facilitating these safe and innovative spaces since.

We’ve had such a wonderful experience with SDN Kingsford. The educators are genuinely caring, patient, and always go above and beyond to make the children feel safe, loved, and excited to learn. Highly recommend!

SDN Kingsford at UNSW Sydney (Owl's House) has truly become an extension of our family. From the very first day, the educators welcomed us with genuine warmth and made our child feel safe, comfortable, and understood. It’s the kind of place where you can see the love and care in every interaction—small moments that mean so much to parents and little ones. That's why we send our second child there too—with our eyes shut! The team takes the time to really get to know each child, their quirks, their interests, and what makes them feel at home. Our child absolutely thrives there, we’re amazed at how much our child learns while still having so much fun. What we appreciate most is the sense of community. It feels less like a childcare centre and more like a village of people who genuinely care about our child. We’re so grateful to have found SDN Kingsford at UNSW Sydney (Owl's House)—it’s a place where our child is not just looked after, but loved. Highly recommended for any family wanting a nurturing, family-like environment. Thank you!
