About the Curriculum

About the Curriculum

“Let the child be the scriptwriter, director and the actor in their own play” - Magda Gerber

Nursery Space: 6 weeks – 2 years

Learning starts from before birth, and our Educators have created a welcoming and nurturing nursery environment where each baby feels safe to explore and discover new things - through their senses, their communication and cues (body language, facial expression and sounds) and through experimentation. On any given day you can see the nursery children engaging in all types of play including sensory play, music time, story time and more. Every day provides a brand new, exciting adventure for our babies to support their development, learning and wellbeing.

Toddler Space: 2 - 3 years

Our teachers and educators encourage the children to learn through play to help enhance their sensory-motor development. This happens through carefully planned music, dance, games, role playing and reading experiences.

On any given day the Toddlers can be seen developing their numeracy by building a tower, sorting objects, pointing and identifying shapes and patterns and participating in counting songs and games.

Children in our toddler space are encouraged to participate in group play. Group play is important as it helps our toddlers develop important social skills such as, turn-taking, developing self-confidence and emotional self-regulation. Our skilled team helps children through talking, planning and role modelling.

Kindergarten Space: 3 – 6 years

Kindergarten is a unique time for learning with peers and developing skills for later learning including confidence and curiosity, important skills for starting school. Our play-based program has school readiness at its core, encouraging active engagement in learning and supporting a range of positive developmental outcomes including resilience, independence, critical thinking and creativity.

The oral language supports literacy learning and a child’s oral language ability is the best predictor for later success in learning to read and write. Hearing the sounds within a language is the first critical step for all literacy learning. Our team supports our Kindergarten children's literacy development by engaging in rich discussions, reading, storytelling, dramatic play and experimentation all of which introduce new vocabulary as part of everyday conversations.

Throughout the Kindergarten year, children use their language to share ideas, ask questions, express themselves, and connect with peers and adults in social settings.

Social-emotional skills, including the ability to self-regulate emotions, are supported through group learning experiences. Our team supports each child’s social and emotional development by labelling and talking about emotions and supporting appropriate responses as together, they engage in new and challenging situations. Our goal in the Kindergarten year is to prepare children and families for a smooth transition to primary school.

Health and Nutrition

Health and Nutrition

Our centre chef prepares and cooks nutritious meals daily, catering to the unique dietary requirements of every child. We believe that by encouraging active participation (such as growing their own fruit and vegetables, preparing, and finally cooking!) children learn to appreciate and understand the importance of healthy eating across a wide variety of food.

Our centre offers seasonal whole food-based menus – created to delight the fussiest eaters.

Hi, my name is Erin, and I am the Centre Manager here at Great Beginnings Floreat. I focus on creating environments where children feel safe, valued, and confident to explore, helping them grow into independent and capable learners.

I began working in early childhood education in 2010 and joined the centre in 2026. What I enjoy most is building strong, trusting relationships with children and being someone they feel safe with as they learn and grow. In my role as Centre Manager, I also enjoy supporting and guiding educators to create caring, high-quality learning environments.

I believe all children are competent and capable learners who deserve to be treated with kindness, respect, and understanding. Each child comes from a unique family background, and I adapt my approach to support their individual needs, culture, and identity. I focus on creating environments where children feel safe, valued, and confident to explore, helping them grow into independent and capable learners.

When speaking with families, I explain that early childhood education and care supports children to build strong social and emotional skills. In a centre environment, children become more confident in group settings, develop their language and communication, and build independence with the guidance of their educators. Our long-standing, qualified team shares a strong commitment to building meaningful relationships and creating a welcoming environment where children can thrive.

Building strong connections with families is a key part of my role. I take the time to get to know each family and understand their home life, values, and routines. I pride myself on a warm and friendly approach, creating a sense of trust and belonging within our centre community.

Our son had to abruptly change daycares and great beginnings were so accommodating to a quick enrollment process. He has learnt so much and is very happy in the toddlers room! Mikayla and the team are so receptive to any concerns you may have and really put all the effort in to make sure you are heard as a parent.

We are into our 2nd year at GBF, our toddler has learnt so much and has been so well cared for since starting in babies room. From management, to the chef, to all the staff you are always greeted welcomingly and all mine and most importantly, our daughters needs have always been met. Thank you for making this journey so smooth.

I was very much not ready to return to work and send my little one off to care but alas we have to do what we have to do. Since returning to work the staff have been nothing short of amazing, my girl loves it, she loves her friends, her educators, her room and most importantly (to her) the food. The staff have become our family, and it’s so comforting to know she is loved and cared for. They have learnt all her little quirks and each person has worked to build a relationship with my baby meaning we thankfully have little to no separation anxiety anymore. I love this centre, there is literally no other place I would feel comfortable leaving my daughter.

My son has been attending great beginnings since he was 10 months old. In that time he has learnt to walk, feed himself, talk, share toys, baby sign language, how to sleep in a place other than his mothers arms and most importantly he has made friends with the other kids. We always get photos of him through out the day with the biggest smile on his face or a mouth full of food. Some would think eating would be his favourite thing to do at daycare. The staff are fantastic, go out of their way to chat about my sons day and how he has been. The Centre itself is in a great location, is well maintained and has pleasing infrastructures in the playground. Since my son has moved to the toddler room it has been a battle trying to get him home in the afternoon as he is too busy playing on the pirate ship. All in all, We could not have chosen a better Centre for our boy and he is loved by his second family at Great Beginnings Floreat.

I visited many daycare centres and of all the centres I visited, this was the only centre that I wanted my baby girl to attend (and I travel from Scarborough). What sets this centre apart from so many is the staff. You can tell that they genuinely care about the children and enjoy their jobs, and enjoy working with their colleagues. It’s a great team of people and they make the centre what it is - a safe, fun and loving place for children. I know my baby girl is happy and loved here, and for me, that is the most important thing. She loves all the carers and now knows them all by name (every carer in the centre). She loves to have cuddles from Mikayla, the centre manger every morning - because everyone at this centre works together and gets involved with the children to build relationships. Other plus’s - the centre is really nice and located in a lovely area tucked in next to a park and quiet cafe strip - not stuck on the side of a busy main road like many other centres. They have an on-site cook, who cooks healthy delicious meals which the kids love. Not to mention that she is lovely, and also popular with the children. There is plenty of space and the rooms are well laid out, and allow a lot of natural light in. The children engage in so many wonderful activities - and my baby girl has only recently moved up to toddlers. This isn’t a centre that employs staff who just ‘go through the motions’. They are extremely careful in who they bring in and this is evident throughout the centre (not implying a high turnaround of staff, only one extra person has been bought into the centre since my baby girl started in March). The centre manager has her priorities in order, and as a result, this centre has exactly what I was looking for - a lot of heart! The carers are an extension of our small family. I wouldn’t put my baby girl anywhere else.
