Meet Bec - Service Manager at Sparrow Early Learning Swanbourne

Dear families,

My name is Bec and I am the Service Manager at Sparrow Early Learning Swanbourne and I would like to introduce myself to you all!

I grew up in Germany close to the Dutch border and my passion for the education system started as early as I was a student myself.

After graduating High School I studied my Bachelor of Arts and my Master of Education in Muenster where I was living for nearly 10 years, a beautiful city in Germany with lots of old heritage buildings which makes the city so popular.

Before I moved in 2018 to Australia, I was teaching for 6 years in secondary schools Religion and Dutch. After moving, I discovered a passion for the early years sector due to the birth of my two beautiful girls. I started reading books about brain development in the early years as well as the importance of the first years of a child. I then decided to start my career path in Australia in the Early Years sector and completed my Diploma to be equivalent to an Early Childhood Teacher in addition to Primary and Secondary school teaching.

I have been working as an Assistant Director since 2021 with my main focus on the curriculum and the community. I was blessed to have beautiful Service Managers in the past who were guiding and mentoring me for the position as a Service Manager.

I’m driven to provide children and families the best care and education as possible aligning with my high standards. As a mother of two I want to create a second home for all families and that families trust my team in caring for their children as well as supporting their children in a holistic manner in their individual development.

My focus is to support children in their development, inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. Building strong relationships with my team, families, children and the community is one of my priorities. Sparrow Swanbourne is a beautiful boutique service and I am excited to be now part of this amazing team.

About the curriculum

About the curriculum

“The Sparrow Way combines proven international early learning methods to create a unique and purposefully contemporary practice designed for today’s society. Guided by the principles of Reggio Emilia childcare and underpinned by The Early Years Framework for Australia, we embrace children’s inherent abilities to learn and develop, creating an environment for them to find solutions through exploration, discovery and invention, marveling in everything around them. The Sparrow Way is our method of working with children based on these beliefs and principles.”

- The Sparrow Early Education Team

The Sparrow curriculum is thoughtfully planned by our educators and shaped by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). Being guided by the EYLF and National Quality Standards (NQS) ensures we offer high quality learning programs that are responsive to children’s ideas, interests, strengths and abilities.

Programs are play-based, child-driven and inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach with a strong emphasis on nature and outdoor learning experiences. Educators carefully design environments that stimulate curiosity and provide opportunities for hands-on learning experiences that are reflective of real life.

Play is viewed as a powerful tool for children to explore, discover and make meaning of the world around them. Activities are largely open-ended, providing a wide variety of natural resources and materials which stimulate imagination and foster creativity, problem-solving and meaningful interactions with friends and educators.

Children are encouraged to express themselves through various mediums, such as art, music and dramatic play, allowing them to develop a deep sense of autonomy, confidence and joy in their learning journey.

Parent communication and involvement

Parent communication and involvement

The Sparrow team values the role of families as children’s most important teachers and our educators foster positive and collaborative relationships with families. Parents are encouraged to contribute their ideas for programming, learning activities and the overall operation of the service.

Our inclusive open-door policy welcomes parents to visit our service, engage in discussions with educators and participate in children's learning. Our educators maintain open and continuous communication with families, ensuring a strong connection between the children's home learning environment and their educational experiences at the centre. During pick-up and drop-off times, educators are readily available to engage with families and gladly share insights into the children's progress, well-being and participation.

The use of the Storypark communication app provides daily updates, photos, and videos, fostering regular connections between educators and families. Parents also receive frequent communication through emails, newsletters, displays, notices, information evenings, special events, and Facebook.

Kindergarten/Preschool Programs

Kindergarten/Preschool Programs

 • Planned and delivered by qualified Early Childhood Teachers
 • Government Accredited
 • School Readiness focus
 • Transition to School program including school visits & transition reports

Sparrow Early Learning centres provide high quality kindergarten/preschool programs led by qualified Early Childhood Teachers. While the curriculum remains play-based, these programs follow a more structured approach to teaching and learning experiences to prepare children for transitioning into a primary school environment. There is a careful balance maintained between child-led and teacher-led learning activities.

Our Early Childhood Teachers cater to the individual needs of each child and in collaboration with parents, ensure that children are adequately equipped with the skills and experience required for a smooth transition to “big school”. Ongoing assessment of children’s progress and development is carefully documented and communicated with families and transition statements can be shared with future schools to facilitate a smooth transition to school.

Attending kindergarten/preschool at their familiar Sparrow Early Learning centre makes the transition from the long day care setting less intimidating and children can continue their early learning journey in a safe and familiar environment, surrounded by friends and familiar educators. It also means families can enjoy the flexibility of extended care hours and continued care during school holiday periods. All meals and snacks are provided, adding to the convenience for busy families.

Sparrow Swanbourne has been a very important part of our family's life since getting involved with the team. Our baby joined the baby room at around ten months old, and from day one the staff respected our wishes at drop-off while demonstrating care. There were a couple of staff that formed good bonds and they attempt to minimise the turn over to ensure bondings with individaul staff. The transition to the second room improved and strengthened our experience, as the child began interacting more and. the team supported this transition beautifully. The app they use maintains balance, keeping us well-informed while still respecting privacy. Bec, who runs the swanbourne team, keeps everything up to date with paperwork and ensures staff consistently follow best practice. The food is outstanding, a real highlight, well above what we could offer at home. The community among local parents is wonderful whom will transition to primary schools in area.. We would happily send our child there again.

We’re so pleased with Sparrow Swanbourne for our toddler. His educators are attentive and caring; we often receive direct messages with a photo to reassure us that our child is having a good day despite difficult drop-offs. We have received detailed plans and progress reports on areas of focus. We’re also very impressed with the different activities the educators plan each day; it’s always a nice variety to encourage discovery and growth.

The program director is also exceptional. Everytime I speak with her, I know she is up-to-date on the plans, progress and happenings with our child.

This is a very hardworking team and it really shows in the program delivery. Thanks Sparrow Swanbourne team!

It has been an absolute privilege to know this centre. Miss Bec and the team have been nothing but supportive and kind. They always went out of their way to make me feel valued and included. The kindness and encouragement I received here made such a difference.
The passion the educators have for helping the children in the environment grow is truly inspiring and I have been able to learn so much. You can see the thought, care, and love behind every meaningful learning experience created for the children. It has been so special to see the genuine care for helping children feel safe and valued.
Miss Bec has been especially patient and thoughtful in guiding everyone and as someone who was new to the environment, that support meant so much to me and is something I will always be grateful for.
