Centre philosophy

Centre philosophy

Montessori education is a personalised approach developed by Dr Maria Montessori, proven successful for over a century. It tailors learning to each child's style, stage, and interests, fostering academic and well-being foundations through hands-on experiences and real-world problem-solving. Montessori educators observe children's interests and guide them toward relevant materials for purposeful and engaging learning. This method acknowledges diverse learning paces and preferences, promoting respect, independence, and freedom for children to direct their own learning, leading to high motivation and a love for learning.

About the curriculum

About the curriculum

The curriculum at Montessori Academy follows a blended approach, drawing on both Montessori principles and the Early Years Learning Framework. The curriculum follows five key learning areas:

  • Practical Life: exercises and activities that children observe in daily life to develop their independence, concentration and fine motor skills.
  • Sensorial: activities that help to refine the senses and lay the foundation of early mathematics, language and geometry.
  • Mathematics: hands on experiences that teach both abstract and concrete mathematical concepts.
  • Language: exercises that help the children to develop their vocabulary and understanding of language.
  • Cultural Studies: children learn about culture and community through subjects such as Geography, Botany, Zoology, Science, History, Music and Art.

The educators use Montessori materials to teach the curriculum and tailor the learning to each individual child.

Centre philosophy

Centre philosophy

Montessori early learning centres differ from conventional preschools and childcare facilities. They create an ideal learning environment, offer customized educational materials, and provide guidance to support holistic child development. Montessori education is active, adaptable to each child's pace, encourages self-correction, and aligns with individual interests. Its overarching objective is to equip children with the knowledge and abilities needed for lifelong learning, fostering confidence, independence, and a thirst for knowledge.

I completed my Kinder room placement at this Montessori centre back in February and March 2025. The daily routine in the Kinder room was extremely well‑structured and organised. Educators guided the children through activities in a clear, systematic way, and the kids consistently showed excellent behaviour. The staff truly care for each child, focus on every individual child, and use different approaches for different children to meet their unique needs. During my placement, I had several days of taking full control of the classroom. Since it was my first time managing a class independently and I had little experience, the educators and room leader around me were all very supportive and encouraging. They helped me lead group times and other activities with the children. My mentor Alan was very responsible. He taught me lots of practical tips and experience, such as how to get along well with children. He also shared a lot about what you need to do if you want to work in this industry, especially when he completed my final report. All the staff were incredibly kind and supportive to placement students. Fiona, the centre director, was also very supportive and approachable. Everyone, from the room leader to other educators, was willing to teach and offer ongoing support. I learned a great deal and really appreciated how friendly and encouraging the whole team was. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to do my placement here, and I truly wish this kindergarten all the best in the future.

I had the privilege of completing two placement periods at Montessori Academy Elsternwick, and it was truly a wonderful experience. The centre manager is incredibly friendly and highly supportive, always willing to provide guidance and encouragement to both staff and students. The teaching team is very professional, dedicated, and passionate about early childhood education. One thing that impressed me the most is how much the educators care about children's emotional wellbeing and overall development. They create a warm, safe, and respectful environment where children feel valued and supported. Each week, every classroom develops targeted learning plans based on the different age groups of children. These plans are thoughtfully designed to meet children's developmental needs and interests. Educators also maintain strong communication with parents, regularly sharing updates about children's progress so families can stay informed about their child's growth. Overall, Montessori Academy Elsternwick provides an excellent learning environment that builds a strong foundation for children's future learning and development. I highly recommend this centre to families who are looking for a nurturing and professional Montessori education.
