West Australian Newspaper, 18 November 2021 reported that children attending childcare near busy roads are 60% more likely to develop asthma. A parliamentary inquiry in Victoria recommended clean air zones around schools and childcare centres after finding that traffic pollution poses significant health risks for young children.

Key findings included:

10% of childcare centres in Melbourne are located within 60 metres of a major road.

At one of the city’s most polluted intersections, children at a planned childcare centre would be 60% more likely to develop asthma.

Heavy diesel truck traffic was linked to increased risks of asthma and other respiratory issues.

The committee recommended changes to planning laws to ensure traffic-related air pollution risks are considered when approving new childcare centres and schools.
