About the Curriculum

About the Curriculum

“Let the child be the scriptwriter, director and the actor in their own play” - Magda Gerber

Nursery Space: 6 weeks – 2 years

Learning starts from before birth, and our Educators have created a welcoming and nurturing nursery environment where each baby feels safe to explore and discover new things - through their senses, their communication and cues (body language, facial expression and sounds) and through experimentation. On any given day you can see the nursery children engaging in all types of play including sensory play, music time, story time and more. Every day provides a brand new, exciting adventure for our babies to support their development, learning and wellbeing.

Toddler Space: 2 - 3 years

Our teachers and educators encourage the children to learn through play to help enhance their sensory-motor development. This happens through carefully planned music, dance, games, role playing and reading experiences.

On any given day the Toddlers can be seen developing their numeracy by building a tower, sorting objects, pointing and identifying shapes and patterns and participating in counting songs and games.

Children in our toddler space are encouraged to participate in group play. Group play is important as it helps our toddlers develop important social skills such as, turn-taking, developing self-confidence and emotional self-regulation. Our skilled team helps children through talking, planning and role modelling.

Kindergarten Space: 3 – 6 years

Kindergarten is a unique time for learning with peers and developing skills for later learning including confidence and curiosity, important skills for starting school. Our play-based program has school readiness at its core, encouraging active engagement in learning and supporting a range of positive developmental outcomes including resilience, independence, critical thinking and creativity.

The oral language supports literacy learning and a child’s oral language ability is the best predictor for later success in learning to read and write. Hearing the sounds within a language is the first critical step for all literacy learning. Our team supports our Kindergarten children's literacy development by engaging in rich discussions, reading, storytelling, dramatic play and experimentation all of which introduce new vocabulary as part of everyday conversations.

Throughout the Kindergarten year, children use their language to share ideas, ask questions, express themselves, and connect with peers and adults in social settings.

Social-emotional skills, including the ability to self-regulate emotions, are supported through group learning experiences. Our team supports each child’s social and emotional development by labelling and talking about emotions and supporting appropriate responses as together, they engage in new and challenging situations. Our goal in the Kindergarten year is to prepare children and families for a smooth transition to primary school.

Health and Nutrition

Health and Nutrition

Our centre chef prepares and cooks nutritious meals daily, catering to the unique dietary requirements of every child. We believe that by encouraging active participation (such as growing their own fruit and vegetables, preparing, and finally cooking!) children learn to appreciate and understand the importance of healthy eating across a wide variety of food.

Our centre offers seasonal whole food-based menus – created to delight the fussiest eaters.

Meet the team

Meet the team

I commenced my journey in the early learning sector in 2012. During my experience in the early childhood education sector, I have held various roles, including the Educational Leader, responsible for guiding quality practice and programming. In January 2023, I joined Golden Bay as the Centre Manager. I hold a Diploma in Children's services.

My passion is to provide children with a rich learning environment that encourages them to have fun and develop their emerging interests, abilities, and strengths. Educators are responsible for giving children opportunities to develop life skills, engage in age-appropriate challenges and make decisions about their learning journey. I work hard to ensure that every child is respected and valued as an individual in our community.

The early years (birth to five) are the foundational years for children to build on social and emotional development. By attending a dedicated early learning environment, your child will have the stepping stones to build their identity, resilience and independence before heading off to formal schooling. We aim to provide all children with a sense of agency and belonging.

Our Team at Golden Bay are hand-picked due to their passion, experience and knowledge in the sector. We are all dedicated to our roles as educators, helping children develop the love of learning for life.

Our families are always welcome here. We have an orientation process for all new families to support them in settling into care. We distribute our event calendar monthly, so you know what is happening at the centre. You will receive regular and transparent communication from us, so you are always up to date. We welcome any feedback, questions or concerns you may have. We are here to help.

I look forward to welcoming your family to our  community.

Some of the staff at Great Beginnings Golden Bay are great, but the management leaves a lot to be desired—especially when it comes to supporting children with special needs. I raised concerns about my child’s care, but instead of addressing them properly, managers Lizzi and Renae responded with vague, deflective language across multiple unclear emails. Rather than taking responsibility, their responses made me feel like my child was at fault, rather than acknowledging the staff’s failure to accommodate his needs during activities. I often felt that my child was left aside and not given the care and attention they needed due to their condition. Unfortunately, I’m not alone in this experience—I know of at least two others who have had similar issues. Additionally, the community nurse has also raised concerns about this centre after hearing similar complaints. It’s disappointing that management doesn’t seem to prioritise inclusivity or proper support for all children.

Response from the owner 26 Feb 2025

Dear Pete, thank you for sharing your concerns. At Great Beginnings Golden Bay, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all children. We take all feedback seriously and strive to ensure that every child feels safe, valued, and supported in our care. While we do not have a record of your attendance at our centre, we want to assure you that inclusivity is at the heart of our approach. We work closely with our Inclusion Support specialist to implement tailored strategies that assist children who may find a larger care environment challenging. Our team is dedicated to working with families to create a supportive space where every child can thrive. Renee and Lizzie have built strong, positive relationships with families and children, ensuring individual needs are met with care and understanding. We appreciate any opportunity to improve and are always open to collaborating with professionals to enhance our inclusive practices. If they could provide any additional support or insights, we would welcome the opportunity to engage in a constructive discussion. Please feel free to reach out to us directly if you would like to discuss your concerns further. Our priority is always to provide the best possible care and support for every child and family in our centre. Kind regards, The Great Beginnings Team
